The largest capital city of both England and the United Kingdom is London. It has been a significant community for two millennia and is located on the river Thames in southeast England at the head of an estuary that extends for 50 miles (80km) down to the North Sea.
The City of London, which is the city’s historical centre and final centre, was founded by the Romans as Londinium and still preserves medieval-era boundaries. Since the 19th century, “London” has also been used to refer to the metropolitan area around this centre, which historically included the countries of Middlesex, Surrey, Kent, and Hertfordshire. This area is known as Greater London and is controlled by the Greater London Authority. Historically, the national government and parliament were housed in the west of the city of London, in the City of Westminster.
London has been referred to as the capital of the world since it is one of the world’s global cities and has a significant impact on its arts, business, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, health care, media, tourism, and communication.
